Which Type of Home Fitness Gym Should You Buy?

November 21st, 2009 | by MichaelZ |

A big advantage of owning a home fitness gym is that you can exercise at home without having to go to a club. You can work out in your own home, in private. This often appeals to people who are not comfortable exercising in the company of strangers. Before buying your home gym some things need to be taken into account in order to buy the one that is right for you.

Things to Take into Consideration

  • How much space is available in your home? You will need plenty of space as home fitness gyms can be very bulky. You will also need a firm base for it to stand on.
  • How much are you prepared to pay? A home gym can be as cheap as 0 or as expensive as 00 for a top of the range multi user gym.
  • Are you going to choose a free weight system or a resistance system that uses cables, weights or rods?

Advantages and Disadvantages of Home Fitness Gyms

With a home gym you can, of course, work out in private in your own home, the gym is always available and you won’t have to wait until someone else finishes before you can do your training. Once you have paid for it you won’t have to pay out fees as you would every month in the club and it is always available. You should also take into account the disadvantages. Initially some home gyms can be very difficult to set up and they are going to take up a substantial space in your home. It may be easier to keep up an exercise routine at a gym among other people or with a personal trainer. A machine at home is always available and it’s easy to put off using it to another day!

Choosing a Home Fitness Gym

The most important consideration, in our opinion, is how well made the unit is. A poorly made gym that is not sturdy will not give you a good workout and is not going to last for very long. This will not save you money in the long run. Look for a gym that is well made, preferable using 11 or 12 gauge steel tubing. Welded joints are preferable to bolts and are found in the better quality home gyms as well as sturdy, strong tubing. Some of the higher quality gyms have lifetime warranties on parts but you at least get a three year warranty on parts and upholstery.

Once you’ve found a good-quality gym have a look at how easy it is to use and adjust. You will want one that is easy to change from one exercise to another and also easy to change the resistance. If it takes too long or is too hard it is easy to allow this to put you off working out. Seats that are well padded and comfortable and that can be cleaned are good points to look out for in a home fitness gym. This is also for safety reasons as you need good padding on leg presses and seats, and solid durable handgrips to prevent injury and blisters.

Conclusion

If you are buying a total home gym don’t rush out and buy the first one you see. Home fitness exercise equipment can be expensive. Find out all you can about how it works and possibly try it out at the store or a local gym. Home gyms can be expensive and you don’t want to make a purchase that you may regret later.
